Question:
We are encouraged to do Amr-bil-Maa’roof and Nahi anil Munkar, i.e. calling towards good and stopping from bad. How do we do the latter?
Jazakallahu Khairan
Answer:
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Stopping evil has three levels: 1) stopping with one’s hands; 2) stopping with one’s speech; 3) merely thinking the evil to be evil.
One should adopt one of the three levels depending on who committed the evil act. If one has influence and authority over the person – such as his wife and children – then he should adopt the first level. If he does not have authority over the person but he knows that he will listen to his advice, then he should adopt the second level. If he thinks the person will not listen and will argue and create fitna, then he should adopt the third level. Also, when doing amr bil ma’roof and nahi anil-munkar, one should always adopt hikmah and wisdom.
And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
