Who We Are
“Are those who know equal to those who know not? It is only men of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allah’s Signs and Verses)” (Holy Quran 39:9)
“ …Verily the Ulama (scholars/theologians) are the heirs of the Prophets, verily the Prophets do not leave behind gold nor silver (wealth), they only leave behind religious knowledge” (Abu Dawood, Tirmizhi, Ibn Majah)
Jamiatul Ulama of Victoria or The Victorian Ulama Council is a registered not for profit organisation of Muslim Scholars. It was created to serve the socio-religious needs of the Muslim community residing in the Australian state of Victoria. The organisation is directed and managed by certified Muslim Theologians only, who have studied and graduated from Islamic seminaries.
Background
With the concern of several Ulama in Melbourne in the beginning 2012, Maulana Abbas Ali (Jamiatul Ulama of South Africa) was approached for advice regarding graduates of traditional Islamic seminaries and how they could best serve the Australian community. Maulana Abbas advised on the establishment of a like-minded theological body under which the ulama (scholars) could work together. With regular meet-ups individual efforts could be consolidated and be more effective InshaAllah.
Alhamdulillah this was realised in the beginning of 2013. A taseesi majlis (foundational meeting) of 10 ulama was held at Darul Iftaa Australia (www.fatwa.org.au) in which the name Jamiatul Ulama of Victoria was selected and a subsequent meeting chose Mufti Muneeb Ahmed as ameer (president) to lead the organisation . A third meeting established a shuraa (commitee) and outlined the constitution of the organisation. This meeting was conducted in the presence of Dr. Mufti Shabbir Ahmed (Imam of Rooty Hill Masjid, NSW).
